  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from PREZ -- Heretics? Not Really. : Well. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Reinold F. -- Powerful and vigorous intellect, strong will and kind heart in this book. (AmazonClassics Edition) : Heretics is the first book and afterwards comes Orthodoxy. Nevertheless you don't need to read it first in order to understand Orthodoxy; even more I would recommend to read Orthodoxy first and if you like it then try Heretics. Orthodoxy is about the personal choices of Chesterton, it's timeless because it uses experiences we all experience; Heretics deals with reflections about the ideas of others and is populated with many names, those related to arts, literature or essays are still known, but there are other names, as politicians, that requires to invoke the X-Ray option and even so that doesn't say much. Another difficult point to me was to understand the word "heretics" as the chapters treat different themes, so far my rustic understanding is that Chesterton means how what was once traditional and time proofed, a rich understanding of humanity, is being replaced by a trend that condemns its past, while using progress as a label to disguise just to make old mistakes ... is it not familiar? It is because is what happens today : ) ( Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Lillian Ammann (Lillie) -- Takes some work to follow : I know Chesterton and is highly celebrated author, and many people love his work. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those. Although I enjoy his wit, I often find his writing confusing. He was specifically talking about people of his era that he was calling heretics, and I didn't know who all of them were. That may have been a part of the confusion, but I think it's just that my mind doesn't work the same way his does—maybe I'm not smart enough. I'm glad I read it, but I like having read it better than reading it. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kyle Willey -- An engaging, insightful, and surprisingly humorous critique of 20th century thought equally valid in the 21st century. : G.K. Chesterton's critique of his contemporaries cuts deep into the heart of many issues in the modern world, but never becomes bogged down in obscure details. Little has changed over time, or else Chesterton's work has a timeless quality to it, because his criticisms remain as valid in the current day as they were in the days they were written. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Roger Whittaker -- Still thought-provoking : It took me a long time to get round to reading any G.K. Chesterton. I was put off by the mental image I had of him - big, boisterous, with a touch of buffoonery, and Edwardian to a fault. He was clearly a lively character of his age, but I wouldn't have expected him to be relevant to ours. It then surprised me to learn how much he was admired by the likes of Calvino and Borges. I wondered what such fine writers saw in him. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 30, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Should be required reading for anyone : Perhaps the most quotable man who ever lived. The most shocking thing about this book is that it reads as if it was written for us today. Now at more than 100 years old you can precisely see that all Gilbert wrote about has come to pass exactly as he described. This and his other work, Orthodoxy, form essential reading for any person. If it were up to me I would make it part of every curriculum. His use of logic and reason and truth and beauty are second to none. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 14, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from T. J. Smtih -- Great book : C S Lewis thought a great deal of G K Chesterton, and was greatly influenced by him as you can understand when you read this book. GKC had the same skill as CS Lewis of putting deep truths in simple and readable language. When you have read this short book you will want to get Chesterton's (nearly) complete works in paperback from Amazon. This latter book includes his novels but not the title being reveiwed. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from John Moore -- Book : Perfectly adequate but not great. It has been presented with American spelling! It would have been written in English. Grrr! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 22, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jedidiah -- Five Stars : Great and insightful ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 16, 2014 )
