What a great story! : I read lots of books and books of this genre are one of my current favs. So many of this type of story are so shallow and the plots so similar this book shines in their midst. Often I am tempted to peek at the end to see if the story is complicated enough to keep reading, but this time there was no temptation as the story was extremely interesting as it unwound. At first it seemed that it would be impossible to even find a motive for one murder let alone two but the clues kept coming. I agree with another reviewer that Posey had more access than you would expect to the police information but is that because in other similar stories the protagonist has to fight with the police to even be allowed access to any information at all? I didn't have any trouble believing Posey's husband, the Commissioner of Scotland Yard, allowed her that access. After all it was her case from the beginning and he has learned to trust her ability to solve difficult cases. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes capable female detectives in period mysteries. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2021 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Vintage Gal -- A Fantastic Story!! : I have adored the 11 Posie Parker mysteries that preceded this one. But this story was truly in a league of its own. Dreamlike and mysterious in the beginning Almost surrealistic, like a Remidios Vara painting . The characters were enigmatic, and became more so as the story evolved. The House of Sinne with its fantastic rose gardens secret perfume laboratory an d alchemical twist was a character in its own right. Full of twist and turns, red herrings, glamorous quirky characters and amazingly complex story this book was just mesmerizing. Can't wait for the next one! The mysteries keep you hanging on until the very end with many twists and turns that always delights. Poise Parker is a fabulous character. She’s relatable, believable, and filled with depth. I especially love how she has had many different love interests and her private life has taken many different directions - keeps it interesting and never stale. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from CC -- Disappointing : I have enjoyed all of the previous books in this series, but found this new one difficult to finish. The plot/solution is tediously complicated while not actually making much sense. The characters are flat and tiresome. Lovelace is an idiot who makes a snap arrest early in the book. Posie has an unbelievable (even for a cosy) amount of access to the police investigation, even apparently leading it at times. She solves the mystery through a series of undefined “insights”—most of the actual facts are hidden until the end, which isn’t fair. Her relationship with Lovelace is lifeless. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from The Schoolkeeper -- Almost a miss : I enjoy the Posy Parker series, not too seriously but like a ‘sweet’ treat. It cannot be said that any of them are deep but this one is almost two dimensional it’s so shallow. Apart from the typos mentioned in other reviews the book seems very light on story/character development and the main characters are almost caricatures of who they are in the rest of the series. I simply cannot believe that someone as high as the Chief Commissioner of police would be either so thick or so blind. It really wasn't necessary to make him so just to make Posie solve the case.
